Court House

The Challenge

In a few short years, Big Spoon Little Spoon chef, founder and culinary personality Leigh Marino has carved out a respectful reputation in statewide foodie circles from his Warragul restaurant.

Having mastered regional fine dining, Leigh was ready to take on the next frontier in Gippsland’s culinary evolution, taking over Warragul’s iconic Court House venue, where he would introduce the British concept of the ‘gastro pub’ experience.

Bringing together the best in fine food and the casual atmosphere of the humble drinking hole (not to mention affordable gourmet pizza takeaway) the new Courthouse needed a brand identity to ease drinkers and diners into a relaxed eating and drinking social environment.

'It’s even better than
we could have imagined.
The end result is a clever
unique, brand.'

The Result

Media Fox has delivered a non-pretentious identity, fusing fun imagery and wordplay with subtle design principles, promising top end service for casual diners.

The new Courthouse symbol brings together two of the venue’s strongest icons – the chef’s knife and the judge’s gavel – in a bold symbolic marriage that paves the way for the playful supporting identity.

Fun culinary puns mix with courtroom jargon and conceptual sketch mash ups, reminding patrons not to take the dining experience too seriously, all under a simple call-to-arms tagline: ‘drink & eat’.

A soft three-tone colour palette plays off the historic building’s smorgasbord of rich stone and timber features, injecting the relaxed gastro pub atmosphere into the former halls of justice as it rolls out across uniforms, menus, signage, restaurant artwork and social media imagery.

“When we decided to open our new restaurant in the old courthouse building, we wanted to start with a strong brand that reflected our historical heritage and our culinary flair. The team at Mediafox came up with some amazing ideas and designs which pay homage to the history of our building and our amazing food. It’s even better than we could’ve imagined. The end result is a clever unique, brand; a proud nod to our past and reflective of all our potential for the future."
